 Joanpere Massana: BORDER AND MEMORY

Behind a seemingly playful work, the work of Joanpere Massana (Ponts 1968) delves into the recesses of memory, the most ancient symbolism of his thought, without too many concessions, wants to extract those most appropriate meanings represented through a personal and unique vocabulary.

The Water Book, The Book of the trees, The Book of Games are antecedents that make the process of a full reflective work of symbolic content. In these parts has researched steadily while repetitive elements in their work a place of reflection.

While the term limit is linked to an imaginary conception, the border is a transition between two cultures, two worlds, two religions, two ways of understanding life. But also a place of waiting, rest, a break where you can become a deep thought. BORDER is the title the artist has chosen to present his latest work. An exhibition at Fort PARTUS, Bellagarde a French fortress at the border that separates the French town Vallespir de l'Alt Empordà Catalan. An emblematic space which in turn leads to a very pronounced symbolism and history that precedes it. A geographic area where the boundaries of the territory fail to place his poetic and artistic discourse.

A series of paintings and drawings, some large format, along with various facilities, make a process that explores the limits of the concept. The dimension of the line is treated as an element separator separates us from what is real and some fictitious case, without ever forgetting the individual and collective memory in this field divisive. Report as containing experiences, experiences, imagined and unfulfilled desires within us that wander fleetingly element but remain impregnated as part of our existence.

The nature, time, memory, ambiguity, focus the speech sample. It is known that Joanpere Massana repeatedly uses the relationship between man and nature as a full life experiences shared dialogue. A changing nature, full of possibilities where everything swap, everything goes, everything disappears, but something is. Insects, leaves, animals, seeds, plants ... constitute a representative of a curious creator, observer of the world poses new ways to understand and comprehend our surroundings corpus. It is evident, therefore, that this great catalog of images of nature accumulated over time will leave marks and footprints that appear unconsciously, but at certain times emerge in a kind of inner journey walking trails lived through perceptions, looks, places, feelings ... This appropriation of fragments of reality (seeds, leaves, stems, ....) is a way of referring to the complexity of the universe and the basis for approaching knowledge.

Footprints left by the same artist as witness to his restless curiosity. Proposals full of allegorical and metaphorical content of sensory experiences rooted to the surface. Items that are frozen in the depths. Witnesses of a past time that are part of our history and chasing us on our way. So petrified that germinate in time you burst into a hidden world, hidden in the outcropping new hopes, new dreams. Some small pockets of fossilized experiences that remind us of the demonstration of the existence in the distant past. A time as traffic concept has in its place an outstanding corpus is represented in different ways. From the enumeration as sequentially as symbolic forms to foot, the road, the wings or the cross that space conceived as a crossroads where time stops and becomes a place for reflection, but also as intersection and border. Walking a few feet in one direction, but not know where; few feet behind him carrying countless battles in sandy deserts where the trace is cleared with the wind. Empedernidas feet that carry traces of their experiences. Back and forth to one end when all lived in the memory lingers. A fleeting transit irreversibly passes while being intangible. Man can do nothing to stop it, just being over it and realizes his course.

The artist aware of his future, attempts to freeze. A time as Virgil himself writes in the Aeneid: "Stat sua cuique days, brief you irreparabile tempus omnibus this vitae" ("It is decided the day / time for each brief and irreparable, is the time of life for all ").
Noteworthy are the titles of his works in this way: Take the time, fled while, hope time pass, time of reflection and waiting time is not necessarily measure, etc.. A course that does not look or feel and they only know their signs; some signs interpreted allegorically staff.

But the memory is displayed continuously as a container of knowledge, as stronghold of experiences, unfulfilled desires, actions accomplished. In this sense, the artist uses the thistle to perform an installation of huge magnitudes as an allegory of remembrance. The thistle, a tough, hard and thorny plant which paradoxically is the first blooming in spring, is used as a metaphor for memory. A magical legend attributes the holy thistle ownership restore lost memory. And in this sense, Joanpere Massana warns of the importance of not forgetting the most essential; the innermost part of our lives. A thistle flower that once accomplished remains petrified skeleton, like a human permanence in time and space that survives as a reminder of what was, of what existed, what never happen again.

Thistles painted from black to blue, with a range of different colors from a wide range of possibilities, individual and collective memories, life experiences that recall our history. A sea of ??possibilities in this installation are multiple interpretations available to an intense debate.

Because after all we still have hope. A breath of optimism with the uncertainty of life, so you can still occur and it can help us understand the world, but never losing the origins. Ephemeral realities that reflect awareness of the temporal finitude of human existence and that through reflection and remembrance, a space-fonterizo with the natural environment as a stage alert us of its importance.
