ART BIENNAL 2020

Art Biennial 2020
Approaches to the Biennial of Catalan Contemporary Art

During the twentieth century, Catalonia was central to contemporary art, especially during the second half of the twentieth century, which has led to this land being the birthplace of great artists.

Brief history of the Art Biennial

At a time of recovery of national liberties and as an act adhered to the Congress of Catalan Culture in 1977, the first Art Exhibition was created. On that occasion, only artists from Sant Cugat were exhibited and I wanted to be a review to find out how the visual arts were in the town. That first edition was exhibited in Sant Cugat and Camprodon.

From that first experience and always under the direction of its creator Josep Canals, the Mostra has grown over the years as a plastic alternative, becoming the most important biennial in Catalonia, in which institutions and companies were involved. .

From then until today, this artistic contest has written a history that is parallel to that of democratic Catalonia, and it reflects the great social and cultural events that the country has had, in which the biennial was also present Congress of Catalan Culture 1977, World Cup 82, Barcelona Cultural Olympiad 92, Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 and the commemoration of the Tri-centenary (1714-2014) events that Catalonia has experienced in the last forty years .

Since its founding, the Biennial has been a proposal for collaboration between active civil society and institutions, which have committed themselves to the newest proposals from our artists. This fact has allowed an itinerant journey, which from its beginnings has brought artistic praxis closer to the places furthest from large urban centers.

It is necessary to emphasize the will from its birth to be a traveling sample, exposing itself many times to places little accustomed and to make contact with enemy with the newest art.

Forty-one years endorse this philosophy, which has involved the most representative sectors of art: critics, historians, gallery owners, and artists who have been part of the different juries. The Catalan Biennial of Contemporary Art is the only manifestation of these characteristics that exists in Spain.

The event is also backed by the fact that it has been a platform for some of the country's most renowned young art firms today and others in the process of consolidating, which have been part of some of the previous editions of the Biennial. , with Ignasi AballĂ, Enric Ansesa, Sergi Barnils, Tom Carr, Lourdes Fisa, Joan Fontcuberta, Joanpere Massana, Roser Oduber, Yurian Quintanas, Perejaume ...

The biennial has brought contemporary art closer to society in general and has encouraged the plurality and contrast of different plastic languages, in different parts of our geography, an aspect that will continue in the current 2020 edition.

The Biennial presents in the country a new way of seeing, appreciating and better understanding the diversity of Catalan Contemporary Art, in these years of change.

The Biennial of Catalan Contemporary Art 2020 wants to be a point of reference for young art in the country in the new times, showing the most poignant art that is currently made in our territory.

In a time of successive and uninterrupted changes in today's society, the XXII Biennial of Catalan Contemporary Art 2020 wants to be a wake-up call to society, showing some of the most creative artists of the new century, through the visual arts.

The oldest biennial in the entire state

Through a public call, widely distributed throughout the country, the jury representing the visual arts sector will choose the best proposals from young creators in the country.

The 2020 edition represents a breath of hope towards today's young art and a motivation of society towards the spirituality of the human being.

Culture needs creators, in addition to spectators, and creators need widespread, impartial and widespread help at their base, with simple, unspectacular aids that are not seen and are not capitalized in the media, but that create climate of creativity. Only in this context can a culture breathe with vitality, and this is what the biennial has tried to do for forty years.
